HS Boys vs McQuaid Jesuit at States
By Marta Tartar
State Championships Day 2 finals brought New York together with McQuaid Jesuit playing for 3rd place in the state.
Like the start of yesterday’s game, center Ruiz made a big tackle setting the tone for the defense. On the end, wing James kept the sidelines protected. Still Kingston broke through but NY held up their first attempted try.
And again, NY found itself in the try zone playing try line defense. This time it was good and the first try was awarded to Kingston, putting them 5-0. At the restart, there was a knock-on to gold giving center Davis an opportunity to make a big hit. Still, gold broke through NY defensive wall but fullback Weaver wasn’t going to let him through. Off a kick lock Vargas made a great catch working with flanker Cutler to push through and make some ground.
Yet gold obtained possession, bringing it back and scoring the second try of the game. The kick was good putting them at 12-0. With a penalty to yellow, NY forwards used the momentum and kept crashing through the line. Off of scrums, NY kept possession for a few phases getting the ball out to center Ruiz who made a short run, went into contact, release and popped right back up.
A good connection was present between the loose forwards and the backs. Flanker Cutler stope the ball of a line out giving the backs a clean ball for nice passes. Penalty to gold close to their try line. NY capitalized on it with scrumhalf Williams dishing the ball to lock Vargas who scored under the posts. The kick by wing Quirante (A) was good putting NY at 7 against Kingston’s 12 points.
Back in the game, gold took a penalty kick adding 3 more points to the board: 15-7. NY wanted it, with every player making big hits and having quick reactions. 8man Ross fell on the ball multiple times, securing it for NY. With the ball bouncing around, NY forms the breakdown and keep the ball on their side. Getting the ball to the backs, fullback Weaver made a break in the line running 80m to score NY’s 2nd try. Kick no good: 15-12.
In the 2nd half NY scrum was low and strong. Players were pushing hard and driving their feet. The backs were feeling the chemistry, with flyhalf Hamm passing to center Aarong popping it to fullback Weaver scoring once more. Score: 15-17.
Both teams were fighting, gold wasn’t letting up. Another try to gold scored off the penalty putting them up 22-17. Back and forth, flanker Cutler inserted into the back line and found the gap to put more points on the board for NY. Having time, he ran closer to the posts, helping the kicker make the conversion. Score: NYRC (24) – Kingston (22)
Lock Vargas caught the kickoff but gold blitzed up and pushed them back into NY’s try zone. Kingston score 29 to NY 24. Then a penalty kick was taken putting Kingston up at 32. Every time gold scored, NY wanted it even more. This was their chance to bring home a championship medal. Center Davis got hold of the ball, running from the 22m line stiff arming and side stepping along the way to score. The kick was good by wing Quirante (A). Score: NYRC (31) – Kingston (32)
One point off with just a few minuted in the game, NY was concentrated. At the restart, the ball bounced and lock Burke (Ross) caught it and pushed up all the way past gold’s 22m. Penalty awared to NY, the kick was chosen. With silence on the field, and no wind to be felt, wing Quirante (A) took the kick and made it.
Final score: NYRC (34) – Kingston (32). NYRC High School boys make history by competing at State Championships and coming home with the 3rd place medal. This was Coach Jamie’s last game with the boys and after an undefeated league season, this outcome was a great way to say thank you for all his hard work and dedication to the team.
