NYRC D3 pull away for a 31-14 win against Old Maroon
Dominant four-try second half sees off the hosts in the Bronx.
The NYRC division three squad claimed its second win of the season with a strong second-half performance against Old Maroon on the Fordham campus. A shaky fall season seemed to be continuing as NYRC were forced to make a pair of first-half substitutions to the back division, and the Fordham exes powered over for a couple of converted tries and a 14-nil advantage. But, this blue-and-orange squad refused to succumb, and that proved to be the final time the hosts would tick over the scoreboard. Late in the opening stanza, Pablo Pinedo grounded one for NYRC's first points, and Dean Ashton nudged the conversion over to halve the deficit.
Coming out of the break facing a seven-point deficit, NYRC were determined to put together a complete half of rugby. Will Stafford fired the first shot of the half as he scored an unconverted try, and captain Josh Mullis pushed NYRC into the lead with a try of his own. After swapping out two-thirds of the front row, a rejuvenated NYRC pressed its slim advantage and Andrew Schwartz knifed over for the try that gave some breathing room. Shortly after, Daniel Lofrese proved that he was back to full speed as he scored his first try of the season. Badger Denehy added both conversions, and the D3 squad greeted the final whistle with a 31-14 bonus-point victory in the northern borough. With one more game left in the fall season, NYRC look forward to building on this second-half effort as they face the high-flying Gotham Knights on the Island next weekend.
