NYRC pound New Haven at home
D2 playoff push continues with comprehensive victory
NYRC hosted New Haven at Randall's Island on another balmy fall Saturday and ran out to a 48-17 bonus point win as the chase for the playoffs continues.
Andrew Magowan opened the scoring in the third minute with a penalty. The next 20 minutes of effort saw NYRC rewarded with tries by Chad Hansen and Moncef Mettouchi, both of which were converted by Magowan. New Haven responded in the 28th minute with a converted try to tighten things up, but Magowan closed the half with an unconverted try, and the halftime margin was 22-7.
Five minutes into the second stanza, Dan King crashed over for a converted try to lock up the bonus point. The visitors responded in the 53rd minute with a long break that ended in a converted try. NYRC's reply came only 2 minutes later as a rampaging run by AARON LUPARI saw Hansen clean up a loose pass on the end and score his second in the corner. Magowan drove the difficult conversion over from the sideline, and the visitors could only muster a short penalty a few minutes later after a high tackle.
The last quarter of the match belonged to NYRC as Rob Ennis scored a converted try in the 69th minute. A late yellow card to Aubrey Shultz for another tackle above the shoulders seemed to provide a bit of hope to the visitors. But, there was no let-up, and Hansen completed the front-row hat trick just before the final whistle to complete the scoring. With a 48-17 scoreline, NYRC are preparing to end the fall with a difficult road fixture against White Plains next week.
