D2 defeat spirited Village Lions
Complete season sweep with a 34-29 victory.
In the second match, the NYRC D2 squad looked to build on its win last weekend in Connecticut by sweeping the annual series against the Village Lions. The visitors shocked the home fans with a converted try only 2 minutes in, but NYRC settled and responded with sustained pressure. A disallowed try appeared to grant the Lions some breathing room, but Johnny Chia slashed though a gap on the outside and went 40 meters to score. Andrew Magowan added the extras and the score was tied.
A period of supremacy by the Lions in the second quarter, led by a rampaging pack, saw them add two tries. But they weren't able to convert either, and a late penalty by Magowan took NYRC into the break trailing by only one try at 10-17.
Coming out of the break, Chia and Mitch Irwin scored a pair of tries in the corner, sandwiched around a converted Lions try. Magowan added both difficult sideline conversions, and the match was balanced at 24-24. Magowan then pushed NYRC out front with a penalty.
A pair of yellow cards left NYRC defending with only 13 for a time. But, rather than collapse, the team responded with a run by Rob Ennis bursting through a seam to score a short-handed try. Magowan added the conversion, and even a last-gasp Lions try wasn't enough as NYRC swept the series with a 34-29 victory.
Tries: Chia (2), Irwin, Ennis
Conversions: Magowan (4)
