Old Blue defeat NYRC in a D2 battle
Four unanswered tries in the second half bring Old Blue from behind to win.
NYRC hosted Old Blue at Randall's Island on a beautiful day for rugby. Immediately after the opening kickoff, NYRC took the lead from a penalty try for batting the ball through goal. The scores in the first half came fast and furious as Badger Denehy
, Ahmed El Mallah, Dan King
, and Clarke Smith
all touched down. Johnny Chia added 3 conversations from 4 for a 33 point haul in the half. Old Blue also scored 3 long, converted tries from dangerous line breaks, in a sign of things to come as the half ended with NYRC on top 33-21.
In the second stanza, Old Blue showed their pace as they scored 4 unanswered tries through their backs to take the lead 49-33. NYRC responded with heart and tries from Joe Blomfeld and Rico Rosa
to cut the deficit to just 2 points. But they were unable to climb the mountain as Old Blue scored one more insurance try to make the final score 56-47. After their first loss of the season, NYRC travel to White Plains next weekend looking for some redemption.
